Program Aides (PAs)

Being a PA is an amazing camp experience where older girl scouts have the unique opportunity to have leadership roles amongst girls of their community and foster relationships with other PAs as well as with the younger campers.

Girls going into grade 8 and above AND having completed the Program-aid-in-training (PAIT) program, which includes both core PA and Day Camp specialty training, are eligible to be a PA at our camp. Outdoor Skills unit training is highly recommended.

Girls trained at our camp in our Outdoor Skills unit and in our PAIT unit program will be eligible for placement in units at our camp as a PA.

Girl with training completed outside of camp Mountaindale West will be evaluated for placement based on the following criteria:

  • Their skills and training listed on their paper PA application
  • Their PA references
  • Their interviews with, but not limited to, the PA Coordinator, Directors and/or Specialty unit leader
  • Their demonstrations of Rainbow skills, if requested

All girls with incomplete paperwork will not be eligible to participate in our camp. Please read the section about registration and the needed paperwork either below or on the registration page of this website.

Any girl who has completed the council PAIT program needs to know that our camp has specialized training needs above and beyond the council offered training, in order to be successful as a PA at our camp. We require that the training in the following units/areas, or equivalent training, have been completed:

  • Outdoor Skills unit
  • Program Aid in Training - PAIT
  • Rainbow Skills program

PLEASE NOTE: If the girl scout will be 18 years old by camp week, then she is NOT eligible to be a PA at Mountaindale West. She can, however, register as an adult for our camp.

Our camp offers PAs an opportunity to be in a girl unit, a sibling unit or the Rainbow Unit. All these units offer a PA aged girl an opportunity to grow, lead and learn.

Volunteering as a PA at camp means you understand your attendance at all the training sessions (Indoor and Outdoor) is REQUIRED, as is your commitment to attend camp all day, every day of the week of camp. There is no unit placement for girls that cannot fulfill these PA requirements.

    Unique PA Opportunities

    1. PAIT UNIT PA

PAs that are interested in being placed as a PA in the PAIT unit (please see information on the PAIT webpage about the unit) will need to apply for placement via an application process. If you are interested in this position, please submit the “PROGRAM AIDE (PA) APPLICATION for PAIT UNIT PLACEMENT” form along with all other required PA paperwork. Only girls that apply will be considered for this position. If there is a lack of applicants, then the Directors and PA coordinator will review PA information and experience and will seek out qualified girls for this position and recruit as needed.

PROGRAM AIDE (PA) APPLICATION for PAIT UNIT PLACEMENT can be found on the "All Forms" page.

    2. Rainbow Unit PA

A Rainbow unit PA is responsible for teaching units within the camp all about the Rainbow progress skills. Rainbow skills are skills such as, but not limited to, knots, knife safety, fire, tents and tarps. Rainbow skills could be equated to Outdoor skills, and they are a core part of our camps mission of teaching and training to all campers in this area. Songs and Games are also a part of the Rainbow unit. PA girls in the Rainbow unit will have the opportunity to lead songs and games for the whole camp.

    PLACEMENT INFORMATION

PAs placed in Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Siblings and Outdoor Skills units will be directly responsible for helping to plan and lead the unit in all aspects of the planned daily events. The PAs work directly with younger children and are expected to be positive role models for everyone, especially those in their unit.

PAs placed in the PAIT unit will be responsible for all planning, training, teaching and the success of the unit. The PAs work with girls directly and are expected to be role models to the girls on what it means to be a PA.

PAs placed in the Rainbow unit will be responsible for all planning and teaching of Rainbow skills, service projects and Songs & Games to the whole camp. Rainbow PAs will serve as role models to not only the campers, but to all the adults and siblings at camp. The Rainbow unit is a vital component to teaching the outdoor skills that all campers should “master” by the time they are PA age.
