Welcome to the info page for adult volunteers.

Adult volunteers are critical to the success of our camp program. Being an Adult volunteer at Mountaindale West Day Camp is a rewarding, fun-filled experience. Not only are you able to provide young girls with a “camp/outdoor” experience, but you also get to do this in a supportive and well-planned environment. Adults who volunteer also find that they gain a wealth of experience and knowledge that they can use and pass on in other aspects of their lives. In return for volunteering, all full-time, full-week adult volunteers ensure that their child or children will have a spot at camp.

We look forward to having you join us at camp for a week where memories will be made!

Adult Volunteer Requirements

  • Volunteers must be willing to be at camp for the entire week in order to ensure that your camper has a spot at camp
  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and must be registered Girl Scout members for the current membership year. If you are not a registered Girl Scout member, our Volunteer Coordinator, Karen Bryan (Kodak), will contact you.
  • Volunteers must pass a background check conducted by the Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington (GSOSW) Council within the past three years from the start of camp
  • Volunteer leaders of JUNIOR units should be able to commit to spending Thursday night with their unit.
  • Volunteers must attend all required training sessions for camp. (See below)

Registration Process

To register as an adult volunteer, please click on the *Direct Link to Registration* button on the left side of this website and fill out our online registration.

Our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you if you are missing any paperwork.

All adult registration forms must be mailed to Kodak (Karen Bryan) our Volunteer Coordinator:
Mail to
Mountaindale West Day Camp Volunteer Coordinator
        c/o Karen Bryan (Kodak)
        12731 NW Waker Drive
        Portland, OR 97229.

During the registration process, you will have an opportunity to express the areas at camp that you are interested in helping. Please be sure to list ALL your skills, hobbies, degrees, trainings, and certifications, as this will help us match you more closely to your strengths. For example, if you like sewing and crafts, you might not want to be placed with a unit doing outdoor sports. If you have any area that you absolutely do not want to be placed, please let us know this as well.

Volunteer Training Sessions

There are two, possibly three, different REQUIRED TRAINING SESSIONS that all volunteers must attend for Mountaindale West Day Camp. Depending on if you are new or returning, you will have to attend the following:
  • New Volunteer Orientation.
    Bonny Slope Elementary School library
    Wednesday, May 2, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

New Leader Orientation is REQUIRED for all NEW volunteers of Mountaindale West Day Camp. We cover your responsibilities, camp guidelines and rules, and what to expect in a typical day. You’ll also be given a visual tour of Camp Mountaindale through a slide show presentation.

  • Indoor Training.

Bonny Slope Elementary School Cafeteria and Gym
    Wednesday, May 9, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

This is a potluck, please bring a dish to share.

Indoor Training is REQUIRED for ALL volunteers. Paperwork and signatures are required during this training. This is a VERY important event where almost all of the preliminary planning is done for the week at camp. What will happen this night:

    • You will get your unit assignment
    • Meet your co-leader and PAs
    • Plan and calendar the camp week with specific activities
    • This is also a time to decide who will complete certain assignments prior to the week of camp (welcome postcard, pick up supplies, name tags, swaps, etc.)
    • Plan a date to meet again before camp to "check in" with each other and make sure you are ready for the camp week
    • Make equipment requests for the camp week for your unit
    • Make any special unit requests (items that we may not carry in our camp supplies, but might need to be borrowed or purchased or special cooking needs)
    • You will get demonstrations and information about:
      • Cooking
      • Supplies
      • Arts & Crafts
      • Ice Cream

  • Outdoor Training
    At Mountaindale
Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Outdoor Training is REQUIRED. This is an opportunity to:
    • Receive instructions about the upcoming week of camp
    • Have a hands-on cooking demonstration.
    • Pick up your unit supplies from Arts & Crafts
    • Pick up your unit supplies from Supplies
    • Give you one last chance to meet with your co-leader and PAs to finalize your calendar for the week
    • Set up your unit site with banners, tables and unit supplies

Outdoor training is your last chance to set up your unit so that you are ready for the campers on Monday morning. Once the campers are at camp, time moves quickly and you will have little time to finish any planning or set up.

Discounts

Only full-time, full-week volunteers can receive a discount on the camp fees for their child(ren). Paperwork is required at Indoor Training to be eligible to receive the discount. The discount will be available during the week of camp and requires a signature.
